Question

Item - 5: Please help me answer this question.

Item 5 You want to turn on the current through a coil of self-inductance L in a controlled manner, so you place it in series with a resistor R = 1600 ohm , a switch, and a dc voltage source V0 = 270V . After closing the switch, you find that the current through the coil builds up to its steady-state value with a time constant T. You are pleased with the current's steady-state value, but want r to be half as long. Part A What new value should you use for R? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. Part B What new value should you use for V0? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

time constant=L/R
         t=L/R
         t is WANTED TO BE HALF.so R becomes doubled i.e 3200 oh

B)i = Vo/R

V0 = iR...........here current is stesdy state reached

and R becomes doubled so Vo becomes doubled.
