Gas exchange in the lungs takes place as a result of pressure differences in the inspired atmospheric air and the oxygen/CO2 in the arteries and veins. Although this difference is optimal for gas change at sea level, people can have physiologic adjustments with increasing altitudes.
At higher altitudes partial pressure of oxygen reduces which in turn decreases the driving pressure of gas exchange in the lungs. This contributes to decreased oxygen delivery to the tissues.
