Question

Go to the PhET website and open the simulation Wave Interference. Select "Sound" and check "measuring tape" and "stopwatch."

(a) Select five different frequencies. For each of them pause and measure the wavelength. Measure the period with the timer. (Use the step feature at the bottom of the screen. Evenly space your frequencies such that all of your wavelengths are between 15 cm and 80 cm and at least 3 centimeters apart. Enter your wavelengths from smallest to largest.)

(b) Determine the wave speed.

______________ m/s

Trial # Wavelength (cm) Period (ms) 1 2 3 4 5

Explanation / Answer

if we consider wavelengths as 15cm, 20 cm, 25cm, 30cm, 35cm

check out the time perioed of OScillation

as it as t1, t2 , t3, t4 and t5

frequency f = 1/time period

so

so use the relation between speed, frequency f and wavelengt L as

V = Lf

so   as the answer to part B
