Question

help with a and b. second order minimum and for b the second order maximum. please help and show steps. thank you!

Light with a wavelength of 562 times 10-9m strikes a piece of metal foil that has two long narrow. Slits cut in it. The slits are separated by 1.45 times 10 -4 m; each slit is 1.06 times 10-5 m wide. At first, one of the slits is covered with another piece of foil. With one slit covered, at what angle will the second-order minimum occur? If the extra piece of foil is removed (so both slits are open), find the angle where the second- order maximum (due to interference) occurs.

Explanation / Answer

9)

Here , wavelength = 562 *10^-9 m

for second minimum

d*sin(theta) = 1.5 * wavelength

1.06 *10^-5 * sin(theta) = 2.5 * 562 *10^-9

theta = 7.62 degree

the angle of second order minimum is 7.62 degree

b)

Now , for second order minimum for second order minimum ,

d*sin(theta) = 1.5 * wavelength

1.45 *10^-4 * sin(theta) = 2.5 * 562 *10^-9

theta = 0.56 degree

the angle of second order minimum is 0.56 degree
