Question
This is a question that I'm confused on how to answer, so I will include the parts that I understand but feel they need to be added to my question in order to answer the parts I don't understand.
1. Draw a circuit with one battery and one resistor. (I understand)
2. Redraw the circuit from 1 and put another resistor in series with the first. (I understand)
3. Redraw the circuit from 2 and put another resistor in parallel with both the original resistors. (I think I understand)
4. What is the equivalent resistance of the circuit? Give your answer in terms of the variable "R". (The one I need help with)
*someone gave me the answer of R^2/2R + R^2/2R, but this was incorrect. Mastering physics said "Your answer either contains an incorrect numerical multiplier or is missing one."
Explanation / Answer
4) when two resistors are connected in series,
net resistance of the two resistors, R12 = R1 + R2
when third resistor is connected parallel with the first two resistors.
1/Rnet = 1/R12 + 1/R3
Rnet = R12*R3/(R12+R3)
= (R1+R2)*R3/(R1+R2+R3) <<<<<----Answer
if R1 = R2 = R3 = R
Rnet = (2*R)*R/(R+R+R)
= (2/3)*R <<<<<----Answer
Ask me if you have any doubt.
