Question
Problem 23.59 A beam of unpolarized light of intensity Io passes through a series of ideal polarizing filters with their polarizing directions turned to various angles as shown in the figure (Figure 1) Assume that 0 J 45.00 a of 1 Figure 1 Unpolarized Part A What is the light intensity (in terms of Io) at points A, B, and C? Answer in the order indicated. Separate your answers with commas. IA IB IC Submit My Answers Give Up Incorrect, Try Again; 5 attempts remaining Part B If we remove the middle filter, what will be the light intensity at point C? Given that,
theta = 45 degrees
Initiall Intensity is Io, At point A it will be given by
IA = Io / 2 = (0.5)Io
IA/Io = 0.5
At point B' It will be,
IB = Io/2 cos2 (45) = (0.25) Io [because, cos(45) x cos(45) = 0.5]
IB/Io = 0.25
At point C,
Ic = Io/2 cos2 (45) cos2 (90 - 45) = (0.125) Io
IC/Io = 0.125
Hence,
IA/Io = 0.5 ; IB/Io = 0.25 ; IC/Io = 0.125
Part(b) If the middle filter will be removed then,
Ic' = Io/2 cos2 (90) = 0
Hence, Ic' = 0
