Question

The question is already answered. I want to understand how the answers of part b and part c are 4cm and 2cm. Could you please help me by showing step by step how to get these answer? Thanks.

Shown in the figure below is Single Slit experiment. Monochromatic red light of wavelength lambda =0.633 mu m comes in from the left and passes through the slit. The result is a diffraction pattern visible on a screen 5 meters away from the slit. Make a sketch of the diffraction pattern resulting from single slit interference. Put your sketch on top of the figure. (NOTE: The figure is not to scale). What is the width of the central peak in the diffraction pattern? What is the width of the other peak in the diffraction pattern? If blue light Were used would the peaks be wider on narrower?

Explanation / Answer

(b) The width of the central maxima is,

y=2LtanA=2Ltan0.24=0.04 m or 4.0 cm

(c) Since with of the secondary maxima is laways half that of the central maxima, the with of the secondary maxima is 2.0 cm
