Question

Calculating energy release and half life problems need these explained well please!

After the sudden release of radioactivity from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident in 1996. the radioactivity of milk in Poland rose to 2000 units due to iodine-131. with a half-life of 8.04 days. Chernobyl iodine is particularly hazardous, because the thyroid gland concentrates iodine. The Chernobyl accident caused a measurable increase in thyroid cancers among children in Belarus. How long (in days) will it take for the activity of the iodine-131 to be reduced to 1% of its original value? A. 26.7 B. 39 2 C. 53.4 D 80.4 E. 804 Calculate the energy released in the following fusion reaction: The atomic masses are: Li- 6,6.01512 neutron 1.00867u, He- 4.00260u; H3, 3.016031u; also 1u = 931 5MeV/C^2 A. 22.1M6V . B. 17.2MeV C. 8.6MeV D.4.8MeV E.2.9 MeV

Explanation / Answer

A) A = A0 (1/2)(t/Thalf )

1 % of 2000 units = 20 Units

substitude

20 = 2000 (1/2)(t/8.04)

6.64385 = t/8.04

t = 53.4 days

B) Here we have to calculate how much mass converted to energy

converted mass = (6.01512 +1.00876) - (4.00260 +30.016031) = 5.249 x 10-3 u

energy = 5.249 x 10-3 x 931.5 MeV = 4.8 MeV
