Question
Icebergs in the North Atlantic present hazards to shipping, causing the lengths of shipping routes to be increased by about 30% during the iceberg season. Attempts to destroy icebergs include planting explosives, bombing, torpedoing, shelling, ramming, and coating with black soot. Suppose that direct melting of the iceberg, by placing heat sources in the ice, is tried. How much energy as heat is required to melt 19% of an iceberg that has a mass of 170000 metric tons? (Use 1 metric ton = 1000 kg.)
answer = J
Explanation / Answer
assuming the temperature of the ice burg is 0 degree celcius, so all heat will be required to change the phase
of the ice from ice to water.
if mass of ice to be melted is 'm' and latent heat of fusion is 'L J/kg' , then total amount of heat required can be find as -
Q = M*L
here only 19% of the ice is to be melted , so mass of the ice = 170000*1000*0.19 = 3.23*107 kg
here L = 334 J/gm = 334*1000 J/kg
Q = 3.23*107*334*1000
Q = 1.07882*1013 Joule heat will be required
