The coefficient of kinetic friction between block and floor is 0.18. While the block is in contact with the spring and being brought to rest, what are (a) the work done by the spring force and (b) the increase in thermal energy of the block-floor system? (c) What is the block's speed just as the block reaches the spring? oble le oble Chapter 08, Problem 055 Units (a) Number (b) Number (c) Number Click if you would like to Show Work for this question: Review Scor Review Results by Study Objective Units Units Open Show Work Question Attempts: Unlimited SAVE FOR LATER SUBMIT ANSWER Copyright © 2000-2015 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. or related companies. a) The workdone by the spring force = -0.5*k*x^2
= -0.5*250*0.14^2
= -2.45 J
b) increase in thermal enrgy = -workdone by firction
= -mue_k*m*g*x
= -0.18*2.5*9.8*0.14
= -0.6174
c) Apply Work-Enrgy theorem
net workdone = chnage in knetic enrgy
-2.45 - 0.6174 = 0.5*m*(v2^2 - v1^2)
-3.0674 = -0.5*2.5*v1^2 (here final speed is zero)
v1 = sqrt(3.0674/1.25)
= 1.57 m/s
