Question

A couple takes a visit to the emergency room. The wife complain's of vaginal discharge and pelvic pain and inflamation while the husband complains of urethral discharge. They are both tested and the mans result's arrive first. The nurse tell the husband that he tested positive for gonorrhea. At the mans request, he ask's the nurse not to inform his wife of his condition. The wife's test results will arrive in another two days. Considering a possibility that the mans condition could have relation with the wife's condition, should the nurse tell the wife? Or should, at the husbands request, maintain the husbands confidentiality? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

The nurse is bounded not to tell the wife about husband’s condition without the consent of husband. She cannot do so because patient’s confidentiality needs to be protected.

But the nurse can start the treatment for gonorrhea for the wife as well. She can reason this by saying that seeing the clinical symptoms she suspects it to be gonorrhea.
