A second infinite sheet with negative charge per unit area- lies in the yz-plane. Find the net electric field at all points that do not lie in either of these planes. Explanation / Answer

here

For the xy-sheet, the field is along the z direction:

E = (sigma / (2*eps0)) * z / mode( z) k-hat

The sgn(z) function ( sgn(z) is +1 for positive z and -1 for negative z, i.e. It gives the sign of z) makes sure the E-field points away from the sheet for positive sigma.

Likewise for the yz-sheet:

E = - (sigma / (2 * eps0) ) * x/ mode (x)) i-hat

then the total field is

E = (sigma / 2 *eps0) * [ - x / mode(x) i-hat + z / mode(z) k-hat)
