Question

The diffusion of a solvent (water) across a semipermeable membrane is called osmosis.
A. Obtain 6 large or 8 small raisins and subdivide them into two groups based on size. Determine and record the collective weight of the raisins in each group to the nearest tenth of a gram. Place the raisins of one group (group 1) in a small beaker and cover them with water. At the end of two hours determine and record the collective weight of the raisins for each group. Before weighting the raisins in the water covered group roll them on a paper towel to remove excess water.

2 (not in water) _________ __________ ____________
Explain the results based on the principle of osmosis. ____________________________

Explanation / Answer

ok well i cant give you the weights because i am not conducting the experiment. but i can give you the results based on the principle of osmosis. osmosis is defined as the movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane from a higher concentration to the lower concentration. so in other words if you place a realatively dry raisin in water, it will absorb the water through its membrane thus swelling the raisin. this shows the phenomenon of osmosis in a way that someone can observe. osmosis can also be defined by net movement of water from one side of the membrane to the other.
