Question

For number 4 part a I got aB and for part b I got 0... is that right or wrong and for number 5 do I start off with a Punnett square... thank you Honeybees are unusual in that male bees (also known as drones) have only one copy of every gene, whereas female bees have two copies of every gene. The reason for this phenomenon is that males develop from unfertilized eggs. In bees, the trait of normal wings (A) is dominant over the trait for short wings (a), and the trait for black eyes (B) is dominant over white eyes (b). If a drone with short wings and black eyes mates with a queen bee that is heterozygous eye color and homozygous recessive for wing shape: (hint: you must have a very clear and complete understanding of Mendel's rules) 4. What would be the phenotype(s) of the male offspring? How many offspring do you expect to have white eyes and short wings? a. b. 5. In cats, short hair (L) is dominant over the long hair (1) and stripes (A) are dominant over solid color (a). A cat with genotype LIAa mates with a cat that has genotype Llaa and they produce a litter of six kittens: Give the phenotypic out come of this cross. Remember to include both the ratios and phenotypes in your response. What would be the genotype of the offspring that exhibit a stripe phenotype? a. b.

Explanation / Answer

4. As the female is heterozygous for eye colour and homozygous recessive for wing shape, its genotype will be aaBb . Hence, gametes formed will have the following combinations

aB and ab.

Drone will produce only one type of gamete - aB

As male honey bees develop from unfertilized eggs, so the genotype of the males for eye colour and wing shape will be aB and ab and phenotype will be 50% short wing black eye and 50% short wing white eye.

Females develop from fertilized eggs.

So, genotype of the females will be - aaBB and aaBb

Their phenotype will be - All will have short wing and black eye.

Hence, b) 25% of the offsprings will have white eyes and short wings

5. Yes, you can do it with a Punnet square.
