Question
Assume that the light bulbs behave like ohmic resistors, and that they are brighter the more current is passing through them. Consider the light bulb in the top left corner of the circuit diagram.
What will happen if you cut the wire at position A?
The light bulb will become brighter.
The light bulb will have the same brightness.
The light bulb will become dimmer, but not go off.
The light bulb will go off.
What will happen if you cut the wire at position B?
The light bulb will become brighter.
The light bulb will have the same brightness.
The light bulb will become dimmer, but not go off.
The light bulb will go off.
What will happen if you cut the wire at position C?
The light bulb will become brighter.
The light bulb will have the same brightness.
The light bulb will become dimmer, but not go off.
The light bulb will go off.
What will happen if you cut the wire at position D?
The light bulb will become brighter.
The light bulb will have the same brightness.
The light bulb will become dimmer, but not go off.
The light bulb will go off.
Explanation / Answer
What will happen if you cut the wire at position A?
The light bulb will become dimmer, but not go off.
reason : as the wire is cut at point A, Bulb at top right corner is cutoff and hence the total resistance of the circuit increases which in turn decreases the total Current flowing in the circuit since i = V/R
as the current decreases , the light bulb gets dimmer.
What will happen if you cut the wire at position B?
The light bulb will go off.
Reason : As the wire is cut at point B , the bulb in top left corner is no more connected to circuit.
What will happen if you cut the wire at position C?
The light bulb will go off.
Reason :
As the wire is cut at C , the circuit is no longer complete
What will happen if you cut the wire at position D?
The light bulb will become brighter.
