Question

Kirchhoff's Rules

Consider the circuit in the diagram. R1 = 6.00 Ohms, R2 = 3.00 Ohms, R3 = 4.00 Ohms, E1 = 1.50 V, and E2 = 3.00 V.

a. Using Kirchoff's Junction rule, write an equation relating I1, I2, and I3. Indicate the direction of current of flow. Use I1 to represent the current through R1, I2 for the current through R2, and I3 for the current through R3.

b. Using Kirchoff's loop rule, write an equation for loop ABCFA.

c. Using Kirchoff's loop rule, write an equation for loop FCDEF.

d. Use the equations from parts a, b, and c to find the values of I1, I2, and I3.

Explanation / Answer

here,

R1 = 6 ohm

R2 = 3 ohm

R3 = 4 ohm

(a)

using kirchoff's junction rule at point F

I3 = I1 + I2 ...(1)

(b)

Using Kirchoff's loop rule, for loop ABCFA

R1 * I1- R2 * I2 = E1

6 * I1- 3 * I2 = 1.5 .....(2)

(c)

Using Kirchoff's loop rule, for loop FCDEF

R2 * I2 + R3 * I3 = E2

6 * I2 + 4 * I3 = 3 ...(3)

(d)

solving equation (1) , (2) amd (3) , for I1 , I2 and I3

we get

I1 = 0.33 A

I2 = 0.17 A

I3 = 0.5 A
