Question

Identify the step in the scientific process represented by the following scenario

a. Dr. Jansen notices that several of the patients in his practice are losing weight on the Atkins diet but are also complaining of mild to moderate depression. He wonders if he should do a study to see if there is a connection. Answer: Hypothesis

b. Tara interviews subjects participating in a human intervention study to find out what they have been eating during the study period. She then measures and records their height, weight and percent body fat.

Explanation / Answer

There are some common steps in any scientific process

Step: 1 Ask a question

It can be any question like what, which , how etc.

In scenariao 1 Dr. jansen must have asked a question that why are these patients on atkins diet are loosing weight? or why are they suffering from depression? or is there any connection between these two?

In scenario 2 Tara must have asked the question that what does these subjects eat during the study period?

Step:2 Do a background research

In scenario 1, Dr. jansen must have done research about the atkins diet and the symptoms of atkins diet.He must have done research on diet plans and depression etc.

In scenario 2, Tara must have done research about human intervention study and food habits of subjects suring study period.

Step:3 Construct a hypothesis

In scenario 1, Dr.jansen have drawn a hypothesis that weight reduction in subjects of atkins diet and depression must have a connection.

In scenario 2, Tara have drawn a hypothesis that food habits during study period must have affected the subjects weight, height and percent body fat.

Step:4 Test your by hypothesis by doing experiment

In scenario 1, Dr.jansen will do study to find the connection betweem weight loss and depression. Study can be like, he can make a group of adults who were separated into two weight-loss groups: a very low-carb plan and a restricted-calorie, moderately high-carb plan. Both groups lost about the same amount of weight over a year—30 pounds. But, according to the researchers, the low-carb group reported higher levels of anger, depression and confusion vs. the higher-carb group. The researchers suggested a link to better serotonin (a neurotransmitter involved in mood) synthesis with the higher-carb group while the low-carb group had lower levels of serotonin.

In scenario 2, Tara is doing experiment for measuring and recording their height, weight and percent body fat.

Step 5: Analyze the data and draw a conclusion

In scenario 1, By studying the affects on various diets in different groups , dr. jansen can analyze the effect of atkins diet in subjects and how their weight loss and depression is related.

Concluding that higher carbohydrate intake can increase serotonin concentrations in the brain, while fat and protein reduce concentrations.

In scenario 2, By measuring and recording subjects height, weight and percent body fat , tara can analyze the affects of food which is taken by subjects during study.
