Question

(8 marks) A m 8 g bullet is fired with a velocity of vbi 850 m/s in the horizontal direction. Assuming negligible air resistance, it hits and pass through a M 10 kg block of wood, initially at rest on a frictionless horizontal surface. The wood is connected to a spring (as shown) which has a spring constant of k 2000 N/m. The block moves d 10 cm before the bullet leaves the block, find (a) the speed of the bullet after impact. (b) Is the collision was elastic or inelastic? If any energy lost due to the impact calculate that energy. M V Hint: Use conservation of momentum, work- energy theorem, and conservation of energy to solve this problem

Explanation / Answer

Q 1: finding speed of the bullet+block system just after bullet hits the block.

here we will use the conservation of linear momentum to find out the speed of the bullet+block system.

let the speed be v m/s.

then using conservation of momentum principle:

0.008*850=(10+0.008)*v

==> v=0.67946 m/s

Q2. energy lost=initial kinetic energy of the bullet-final kinetic energy of the bullet+block system

=0.5*0.008*850^2-0.5*(10+0.008)*0.67946^2=2887.7 J

hence the collision is inelastic.
