Question
The figure to the right shows four systems of charged particles labeled (a)_(d). Each system contains two charges. Systems (a) and (c) con tain two positively charged particles with charge -+q. Systems (b) and (d) contain particles with equal but opposite charge q. The particles are a distance d from the central point P in systems (c) and (d) and a distance 2d from the central point in (a) and (b). Rank the magnitude of the electric field, E, at the point P of the four systems. Select One of the Following: (a)Eb = EdExplanation / Answer
Electric field due to a charged particle q at a point at a distance of d is kq/d^2
and for +ve charge it is away from charge and for -ve it is towrads charge.
so
a) Ea = kq/(2d)^2 - kq/(2d)^2 = 0
b) Eb = kq/(2d)^2 + kq/(2d)^2 = kq/2d^2 or (kq/d^2)/2
c) Ec = kq / d^2 - kq/d^2 = 0
d) Ed = kq/d^2 + kq/d^2 = 2kq/d^2
so Ea = Ec < Eb < Ed
Option ( d)
