Question

1.) Suppose after charging a 2.3 µF capacitor to 9 V, you connect it to the second uncharged capacitor of 7 µF. What voltage will your voltmeter read across the second capacitor after repeating the charge sharing process three times? Express the answer with one decimal place.

2.) In the circuit sketched in Fig., C1 = 3.3 × 10-6 F and C2 = 10.5 × 10-6 F. What must be the capacitance Cx in microfarads if the ratio V0/V1 is to be 16? (V1 is the voltage across capacitor C1.) Express the answer with one decimal place.

Explanation / Answer

C1 = 2.3u F
V1 = 9v
Q1 = C1 * V = 2.3 u * 9 = 20.7u C

C2 = 7uF
V2 = 0

V = (C1V1 + C2V2) / (C1 + C2)
We first need to find V2, volts across second capacitance:

V = (2.3 * 9 + 7 * 0) / (2.3 + 7) = 2.23 volts
Take this voltage and plug it in for V2 -
V =(2.3 * 9 + 7 * 2.23) / (2.3 + 7) = 3.90 volts
Take this voltage and plug it again for V2 -
V =(2.3 * 9 + 7 * 3.90) / (2.3 + 7) = 5.16 volts

Voltmeter read across the second capacitor V = 5.2 Volts
