Question

A small metal sphere has a mass of 0.18 g and a charge of -21.0 nC . It is 10 cm directly above an identical sphere with the same charge. This lower sphere is fixed and cannot move.

Part A

What is the magnitude of the force between the spheres?

Part B

If the upper sphere is released, it will begin to fall. What is the magnitude of its initial acceleration?

Problem 20

Object A, which has been charged to + 16 nC , is at the origin. Object B, which has been charged to 20 nC , is at (x,y)=(0.0cm,2.0cm).

Part A

What is the magnitude of the electric force on object A?

Part B

What is the magnitude of the electric force on object B?

Explanation / Answer

here,

mass of small sphere , m1 = 0.18 g

m1 = 0.18 * 10^-3 kg

charge on sphere1 , q1 = -21.0 nC

q1 = 21 * 20^-9 C

distance between the spheres , d = 10 cm

d =0.1 m

part A)

the magnitude of the force between the spheres , F = k * q1^2/d^2

F = 9 * 10^9 * (21 * 20^-9)^2 /0.1^2

F = 3.97 * 10-4 N

the magnitude of the force between the spheres is 3.97 * 10-4 N

part B)

the magnitude of its initial acceleration , a = g - F/m1

a = 9.8 - 3.97 * 10-4 / (0.18 * 10^-3)

a = 7.59 m/s^2

the magnitude of its initial acceleration is 7.59 m/s^2
