LAB 2 VECTOR QUANTTES 28 Discussion L. What possible sources of error can you identify for the graphical method of vector addition? 2. What possible sources of error can you identify for the analytical method of vector addition? 3. What possible sources of error can you identify for the experimental method of vector addition? 4. Of the graphical and analytic methods, which one do you consider to be more accurate? Why? 5. Why is it not possible to experimentally determine the resultant vector directly from the force table?
Explanation / Answer
1) Pencil width, error in the protractor, error in your angle reading, error in your trace, etc.
2) Rounding off of the decimals, etc
4) The Analytical method is more accurate, precise and efficient compared to graphical method of analysis. These two methods of analysis in the resolution of forces are both important, but only one is more efficient and accurate. Graphical method in physics is only a representation of vector addiction or subtraction. While analytical method of analysis employs geometry and simple trigonometry rather than ruler and protractor of graphical methods.
5)
To experimentally add vectors we use the force table. We cannot find the resultant directly. We find
the third vector, called the equilibrant, that cancels the other two and balances the ring in the force table.
0 = F 1 + F 2 + E
It follows that the resultant can then be found from the equilibrant.
R = E
The resultant then has the same magnitude as the equilibrant and is in the opposite direction.
