Question

Task 2: The following example is from the online Nature textbook. As you know, there is an ongoing controversy over whether or not cell-phone usage while driving results in more traffic accidents. One hypothesis is that reaction time is slowed down while having a conversation on a cell phone. A simple study was designed to test whether reaction times are indeed slowed down while on the phone, without putting the subjects at risk of an accident. In this study, 8 students are asked to catch a falling object (a ruler) while talking on the phone, and to repeat the experiment while not talking on the phone (not necessarily in that order).

Explanation / Answer

Variance can be calculated by adding up individual variances,

Variance for group with cell phones = (0.38+1.90+1.90+0.14+2.62+1.90+6.86+0.14)

= 13.22

Variance for group without cell phones = (0.56+1.56+1.56+0.06+0.06+3.06+0.56+0.06)

= 7.48

Standard deviation can be calculated by taking square root of variance.

For group with cell phones, SD = square root of 13.22 = 3.636

For group without cell phones, SD = square root of 7.48 = 2.735

There are 8 samples in both groups.
