Question
46) A basketball player is tunning at 5.00m/s towards the basket when he jumps into the air to dunk the ball. He maintains his horizontal velocity
a) What vertical velocity does he need to rise o.70m above the floor.
b) How far from the basket ( measured in the horizontal direction) must he start his jump to reach his maximum height at the same time as he reaches the basket?
55) Verify that the coin dropped by the airline passenger in the example 3.8 travels 144m horizontally while falling 1.50m in the frame of reference of earth.
Explanation / Answer
46)
Here ,
height of jump , h = 0.70 m
let the vertical velocity is vy
using third equation of motion
vy^2 - 0 = 2 * 9.8 * 0.70
vy = 3.704 m/s
the vertical velocity needed is 3.704 m/s
b) time taken to reach height 0.70 m
using first equation of motion
v = u + g * t
t = 3.704/9.8
t = 0.378 s
Now , distance = speed * time
distance = 0.378 * 5
distance = 1.89 m
he must jump 1.89 m away from the basket
