Question
The doorbell assembly at your family home has stopped working. You decide to take it apart to see how it works. You notice that it consists of a coil of wire and a magnet. The magnet rests in a track or channel inside of the coil of wires. When find that there is a broken wire inside the box - after you fix the wire you test it and notice that the magnet moves to the right when the current is applied and then is pulled back to the left with a spring when the current stops flowing. All of the wires are the same color and there are no markings on any of the terminals. Want to know what direction the current is flowing and also want to know which end of the magnet is N or S. You have a compass available to you but not a voltmeter. How do you determine which direction of the magnet is N or S and how do you determine the direction of the current?Explanation / Answer
First we should turn off thet current and bring the compass near magnet
If the end of compas which is near magnet shows N than the end of magnet will have S pole on that side and vice versa .
Now we have known the ends of magnet
Case1
If the compass is placed left to magnet and the deflected end of compass is S than the magnet will have N pole to left side and current flowing via coil will be Anticlockwise as seen from right and clockwise as seen from left. And vice versa
Case 2 .
If compass is placed right to magnet and deflected end of compass is S than magnet will have N pole to right side and current flowing via coil will clockwise as seen from right end and anticlockwise as seen from left .And vice versa
