Question

The world's largest telescope made only from lenses (with no mirrors) is located at the Yerkes Observatory near Chicago. Its objective lens is 1.0 m in diameter and has a focal length of +18.9m. The eyepiece has a focal length of +7.5 cm. The objective lens and eyepiece are separated by 18.970 m. What is the location of the final image of a Moon crater 3.8 times 10^5 km from Earth? If the crater has a diameter of 2.0 km. what is the size of its final image? Determine the angular magnification of the telescope by comparing the angular size of the image as seen through the telescope and the object as seen by the unaided eye.

Explanation / Answer

a)

as for the objective lens , the image will be formed at the focal point of the lens ,

for the eye peice ,

do = 0.070 m = 7 cm

Using lens formula ,

1/7.5 = 1/7 + 1/di

di = -105 cm

the image is formed at -105 cm from the eye peice.

b)

Here ,

size of final image = 2000 * 105 * 18.9 /(0.070 * 3.8 *10^8)

size of final image = 0.149 m

c)

angular magnification = (0.149/105)/(2000 /3.8 *10^8)

angular magnification =26961
