Question

Vector Help Please

a) Using the figure of the "smiley-face, moon, and triangle": Find the magnitude of the vector (a + b).

b) Using the "smiley-face, triangle, and moon" figure: Find the direction (measured counter-clockwise from East, the "standard math class way", in degrees) of the vector (a + b)

c) In the figure with the "smiley-face, moon, and triangle": find the magnitude of the vector (b - a).

d)Using the "smiley-face, moon, and triangle" figure: Find the direction (measured counter-clockwise from East, the "standard math class way", in degrees) of the vector (b - a)

e)

Explanation / Answer

Here, Horizontal component of b-a = 6.20 * cos40 - 5.80 * sin28

                                                           = 2.0265

         Vertical component of b-a = - 6.20 * sin40 - 5.80 * cos28

                                                     =   - 9.106

=>   angle =   - tan-1( 9.106/2.0265)

                  =   -   77.45   degree

=> Horizontal component of b+a = 6.20 * cos40 + 5.80 * sin28

                                                           = 7.47

=>    Vertical component of b+a = - 6.20 * sin40 + 5.80 * cos28

                                                     = 1.1358

=>   angle   = 8.65 degree
