Question
In a physics experiment I obtained the following equations from 3 matching graphs while walking away from a motion detector and using logger pro:
I) Position vs. time graph y= 0.4278 x + 0.2712
II) Velocity vs. time graph y= -0.3308 x + 1.7915
III) Acceleration vs. time graph y= -0.1897 x + 0.9765
a) write the slopes for each one using the correct unit
b) write the y-intercept for each one using the correct unit
c) what means that the slope is negative in the velocity vs. time and the acceleration vs. time graphs?
Note: It's very important to write the correct unit and to use the actual variables for each equation. (slope and y-intercept)
Explanation / Answer
Part (a) : The slope for each equation is;
(1) Position vs time graph; slope = 0.4278 m/s.
(2) Velocity vs time graph: slope = -0.3308 m/s2.
(3) Acceleration vs time graph: slope = -0.1897 m/s3.
Part (b) : the y-intercept for each equation is;
(1) Position vs time graph; y- intercept = 0.2712 m.
(2) Velocity vs time graph: y- intercept = 1.7915 m/s.
(3) Acceleration vs time graph: y - intercept = 0.9765 m/s2.
Part (c) : The meaning of negative slope in the velocity vs time graph is that the velocity will decrease with increase in time and also in case of the acceleration vs time graph is that the acceleration will decrease with increase in time.
