Question

Refer to the three figures below of a candle on a table in front of a plane (flat) mirror. In Figure 2, the candle is moved to the new location shown. The image of the candle as seen by the person is now A. To the left of where it was before, B. To the right of where it was before, C. In the same location as before, D. No image is seen by the person, E. Not enough information is given. In Figure 3, the candle is moved back to its original location, and the person moves to the left to the new position shown. Compared to Figure 1, the location of the image of the candle is now A. To the left of where it was in Figure 1, B. To the right of where it was in Figure 1, C. In the same location as in Figure 1, D. There is no image of the candle, E. Not enough information is given.

Explanation / Answer

(3) When we sight at the image of an object in the mirror, light travels along our line of sight towards our eye. The object is being illuminated by light in the room; a countless number of rays of light are reflecting off the object in a variety of directions. When viewing the image of the object in a plane mirror, one of these rays of light originates at the object location and first travels along a line towards the mirror. This ray of light is known as the incident ray. one of the incident ray intersects the mirror at the same location where our line of sight intersects the mirror( then for that ray only we can see the object) . The light ray then reflects off the mirror at same angle and travels to our eye; this ray of light is known as the reflected ray.

Thus the image is formed in the miror in a distance b/w us and object forming a cone like structure as according to law of relfection, angle of incidence and angle of reflection are same.

Thus for the given case in 2nd figure, option D is correct i.e no image will be seen by the person

(4) For the same reason as given above, option A will be correct i.e To the left of what it was before
