In the purification process, the organic layer is washed with 2 M NaOH and then with saturated sodium chloride solution. What is the purpose of each wash? After the washes described in question 2, the 1-bromobutane is treated with anhydrous Na_2SO_4. Why is this done?

1) a) It is necessary to add water to step up the reaction rate .

     b) If water were not added product formed would be very very less and at a very slow rate . Bromine gas would be favoured as product .

c) If twice much water is added , product formed would be four times at double of the original rate .

2) Purpose of each wash is to remove the acidic content of the salt .

3)    This is done so that administration does not disturb normal electrolyte balance and does not lead to absorption or excretion of water and ions . Sodium sulfate anhydrous disassociates in water to provide sodium ions and sulfate ions.
