Question

You are on a train traveling east at speed of 23 m/s with respect to the ground.

1) If you walk east toward the front of the train, with a speed of 2.8 m/s with respect to the train, what is your velocity with respect to the ground?

2) If you walk west toward the back of the train, with a speed of 2.7 m/s with respect to the train, what is your velocity with respect to the ground?

3) Your friend is sitting on another train traveling west at 20 m/s. As you walk toward the back of your train at 2.7 m/s, what is your velocity with respect to your friend?

Explanation / Answer

1)Velocity will be 2.8+23=25.8m/s since both the velocities are in same direction so they add up.

2)Velocity will be 23-2.7=20.3m/s since the velocities are in opposite direction so we need to substract.

3)Velocity will be 20-(-23+2.7)=40.3m/s
