Question

A double slit is set up and illuminated with light of wavelength 655 nm. The distance between the slits is 2.00×104 m and the light is reflecting off a screen which is 2.50 m away.

At what distance is the second maxima located from the center of the pattern?

At what distance is the third maxima located from the center of the pattern?

Explanation / Answer

here,

wavelength , lamda = 6.55 * 10^-7 m

the distance between the slits , d = 2 * 10^-4 m

screen distance , D = 2.5 m

the distance of seccond maxima , y2= 2 * lamda * D/d

y2 = 2 * 6.55 * 10^-7 * 2.5 /( 2 * 10^-4)

y2 = 1.64 * 10^-2 m

the distance of third maxima , y3 = 3 * lamda * D/d

y3 = 3 * 6.55 * 10^-7 * 2.5 /( 2 * 10^-4)

y3 = 2.46 * 10^-2 m
