Question

1) A 40 kg hay bale is lifted to a height of 30 meters and then released to fall freely. What are the potential energy and kinetic energy at 13 meters above the ground?

Potential Energy = XXXX Joules Kinetic Energy = XXXX Joules

2) A simple pendulum is 1.6 meters long and has 8 kg bob. How much work is needed to move the pendulum from it's lowest point to a horiztonal position?

Work Input = XXXX Joules

3) A 3.9 kg ball drops a vertical distance of 33 meters and rebounds to a height of 15 meters. How much energy was lost?

Work Out = XXXX Joules

4) A roller coaster, which weighs 1,350 pounds, starts at a heigh of 200 feet. If the roller coaster comes to a stop at the second hill with a height of 140 feet, how much energy was lost to friction?

Wo = XXXX foot*lbs

Explanation / Answer

1) potential energy = 40 * 9.8 * 13 = 5096 J

    kinetic energy =   40 * 9.8 * (30 - 13) = 6664 J

2)    work is needed to move the pendulum = 8 * 9.8 * 1.6 = 125.44 J

3)     energy was lost   =   3.9 * 9.8 * (33 - 15)

                                  = 687.96 J

4)   energy was lost to friction =    1350 * (200 - 140)

                                                = 81000 foot*lbs
