Question

Intensity-Energy dependence at a given frequency, frequency effect on stopping potential V_0, KE of escaping electron, work function. Consider a-c below. To Do: 1) Why is current higher with intensity 2 than 1 in a? 2) Write a clear sentence that explains "in your own words" the effect of frequency of the light on V_0 in b. 3) What is the relationship between the slope, KE and frequency?... a math expression 4) If the energy reference is Evac, which metal has the highest work function? 5) Look up and provide work values for the metals in c. cite where you got them. 6) Who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for the P-e E?

Explanation / Answer

1)   This is because with increase in intensity photoelectric current increases due to larger emitted photoelectrons from metal surface .

2)    With increase in frequency , value of stopping potential becomes more negative . Larger potential has to be applied to stop the photoelectric current .

3)   kE   =   slope - hf

4) W has the highest work function .

5)   Cs = 0.563 eV

     K = 0.672 eV

    W = 0.867 eV

6)   Albert Einstein won Nobel Prize .
