Question

college physics a strategic approach book
For chapter 5 questions 4 & 7, both problems are essentially structured the same, yet the axis for Tcos(theta) and Tsin(theta) end up being reversed for the x & y axis'. How do I determine which formula applies to each axis for any similar problem?

Explanation / Answer

Tcos(theta) is for force in x-axis if theta is the angle between Tension and x-axis.

But if theta is angle between y axis and tension, then Tsin theta will be taken tension in x-axis

Remember: cos theta is always towards the axis which contains theta angle.
