Chapter 18, Problem 10 Two tiny conducting spheres are identical and carry charges of -16.6HC and +59.2HC. They are separated by a distance of 2.95 cm. (a) What is the magnitude of the force that each sphere experiences? (b) The spheres are brought into contact and then separated to a distance of 2.95 cm. Determine the magnitude of the force that each sphere now experiences. (a) Number Units (b) Number Units Question Attempts: 0 of 8 used SAVE FOR LATER SUBMIT ANSWER

Explanation / Answer

A. electrostatic force is given by

F = k*q1*q2/d^2

k = 9*10^9

d = 2.95 cm = 0.0295 m

F = 9*10^9*59.2*16.6*10^-12/0.0295^2

F = 10163.14 N (since these are opposite charges, so force will be attractive.)

B.

if spheres are brought into contact then total charge will equally distribute on each sphere

Qa1 = Qb1 = (Qa0 + Qb0)/2

Qa1 = Qb1 = (59.2 - 16.6)/2

Qa1 = 21.3 uC

Qb1 = 21.3 uC

Now Force will be

F = 9*10^9*21.3^2*10^-12/0.0295^2

F = 4691.99 N (since both sphere have positive charge so force will be repulsive)
