Question

1.)A scuba diver training in a pool looks at his instructor as shown in the figure below. What angle does the ray from the instructor's face make with the perpendicular to the water at the point where the ray enters? The angle between the ray in the water and the perpendicular to the water is 35.8°.
°

2.) Suppose you have an unknown clear substance immersed in water, and you wish to identify it by finding its index of refraction. You arrange to have a beam of light enter it at an angle of 40.5°, and you observe the angle of refraction to be 35.2°. What is the index of refraction of the substance and its likely identity? (Enter your answer to at least three decimal places. Use any necessary data found in this table.)

index     substance

Explanation / Answer

part 1:

assume that refraction index of water is 1.33.

refraction index of air is 1.

if angle made by ray from instructor's face with perpendicular to the water at the point

where the ray enters is theta

then 1*sin(theta)=1.33*sin(35.8)

==>sin(theta)=0.778

==>theta=51.077 degrees

hence angle made by the ray from instructor's face is 51.077 degrees.

Q2.refractive index of water is 1.33.

refractive index of the unknown substance to be n.

then using snell's law:

1.33*sin(40.5)=n*sin(35.2)

==>n=1.33*sin(40.5)/ssin(35.2)=1.4985

substance is most possbile crown glass.
