Question
If someone could show all the step to solving this, I tend to get a little confused with the concepts and then taking those and calculating them. I'm also having trouble drawing the free body diagram.
A ball of mass 400 g and volume 100 cm^3 is released from rest just under the surface of a lake of fresh water.
a. Find the buoyant force acting on the ball. [ Hint: be careful with units. To find a weight in Newtons, you must use SI units for g = 10 m/s^2 and for the mass.]
b. Find the acceleration of the ball right after it has been released.
Explanation / Answer
mass m=400g=0.400 kg
voiume V=100*10^-6 m^3
now we find the density of the body
density of the body =mass/voiume=400*10^-3/100*10^-6=4000 kg/m^3
density of the water =1000
(a) ans
the buoyant force Fb=mg*1000/4000=0.400*10*1000/4000=1 Newton
(b) ans
now we find the acceleration
Fb=m[g-a]
1=0.400[10-a]
1000/400=10-a
2.5=10-a
acceleration =10-2.5=7.5 m/s^2
