Question

Point A is the midpoint of one of the sides of a square. On the side opposite this spot, two in-phase loudspeakers are located at adjacent comers, as in Figure 27.39. Standing at point A you hear a sound because of constructive interference between the identical sound waves coming from the speakers. As you walk along the side of the square toward either empty corner, the loudness dim in less gradually to nothing and then increases again until you hear a loud sound at the corner. If the length of each side of the square is 3,4 m, find the wavelength of the sound waves.

Explanation / Answer

first maxima heard at each corner will have a path difference of = lambda

So,

Length of diagonal - length of side = lambda

using pythagoras theoram

D^2 = L^2 + L^2

D = sqrt (3.4^2 + 3.4^2) = 4.808 m

lambda = 4.808 - 3.4 = 1.408 m

wavelength = 1.408 m
