Question

Why are the plates used in the skin microbiology experiment incubated at 37 °C? a) The temperature of the human body is 37 °C and bacteria on our skin will grow well at body temperature b) The temperature of the human body is-37 °C and bacteria on our skin will grow poorly at body temperature O c) Bacteria isolated from the human body would be non-pathogenic if grown at body temperature d) Bacteria isolated from the human body would only be non-pathogenic if they are grown at lower temperatures such as 20 °C O e) Bacteria isolated from the human body are all pathogenic and must be grown at -37 °C so they remain pathogenic

Explanation / Answer

Answer-a) Plates used in skin microbiology experiment are incubated at 370C as it is the optimum temperature for growing microorganisms. The plates are incubated in an oven at this temperature which allows the rapid growth of bacteria on the agar culture plates. This experiment can be performed in the laboratory by taking a sterile swab and dipping it in sterile water and rubbing it on the surface of skin on the human body. This swab is then spread on the agar plate and let it grow on the culture plates.
