Question

Gregory gets out of his car in a parking lot. the parking lot is on the hill and has a 4 degree slope. 12 meters downhill a little old lady lets go of a fully loaded 12 kg shopping cart. The cart wheels are frictionless as the cart rolls straight down hill. Greg sprints after the cart at 4.2 m/s. Disregard effect of rotation on wheels A- what is the acceleration of the cart B- how long until Greg catches the cart C- how far did the cart roll

A- what is the acceleration of the cart B- how long until Greg catches the cart C- how far did the cart roll

Explanation / Answer

Accelearation of the cart,

a = g*sin(theta)

=9.81*sin 4

=0.6843 m/s

(b) When greg catches the cart

distance moved by greg = distance moved by cart

d = v*t = 1/2*a*t^2

4.2*t = 1/2*0.6843*t^2

t = 12.28 s (time to catch the cart)

(c)

distance cart roll

d = v*t = 4.2*12.28= 51.56 m
