Question
You have set up a laser that illuminates a single slit that is 2um (or 2000 nm) wide. An interference pattern is projected onto a screen. The first dark fringe is found at angle 15 degrees from the central peak.
a) Determine the wavelength of the light from the laser
b) The central maximum has a width of 1.5 cm. What is the distance between the slit and the screen?
***Please include all formulas, descriptions, explanations, etc. I really want to understand this problem and I would like to see it done step by step and an explanation for each step. Thanks.
Explanation / Answer
sintheta = lambda/a
lambda = a*sin15 = 2*10^-6*sin15 = 517 nm <<<<<<<,----------------answer
b)
slit width
Y = 2L/a
1.5*10^-2 = 2L/(2*10^-6)
L = 1.5*10^-8 m
