Question

The helicopter view in the figure below shows two people pulling on a stubborn mule. (Take f_1 = 131 N and F_2 = 60.0 N.) (a) Find the single force that is equivalent to the two forces shown above magnitude N direction (counterclockwise from the +x-axis) (b) Find the force that a third person would have to exert on the mule to make the net force equal to zero, magnitude N direction (counterclockwise from the +x-axis) A novice golfer on the green takes three strokes to sink the ball. the successive displacements of the ball are d_1 = 3.91 m to the north, d_2 = 2.10 m 1 golfer could make the hole in what single displacement?

Explanation / Answer

a)
x-component of net force,

Fnetx = F1*cos(60) - F2*cos(75)

= 131*cos(60) - 60*cos(75)

= 50 N

y-component of net force,

Fnety = F1*sin(60) + F2*sin(75)

= 131*sin(60) + 60*sin(75)

= 171.4 N

so, net force, Fnet = sqrt(Fnetx^2 + Fnety^2)

= sqrt(50^2 + 171.4^2)

= 178.5 N

direction : theta = tan^-1(Fnety/Fnetx)

= tan^-1(171.4/50)

= 73.7 degrees

b) F3 = 178.5 N

direction = 180 + 73.7

= 253.7 degrees
