Question

please answer and show how you got there.

Figure WG27.3 shows a sensitive device for measuring an objects mass. The object hangs by a string from a horizontal rod through which an electric current is directed from left to right. The rod is free to slide up and down a pair of vertical columns with negligible friction, but the rods orientation remains fixed. The entire unit is placed in an external magnetic field, and the current in the circuit is adjusted until the rod and object are motionless. Once this equilibrium has been attained, the objects mass is calculated from the magnitude of the magnetic force required to balance the gravitational force on the object. In which direction must the external magnetic field point - into or out of the page in Figure WG27.3 -in order for the scale to work? What current is required to balance the rod if the combined mass of the object and the rod is 0.157 kg and the magnetic field has magnitude 0.150 T?

Explanation / Answer

the magnetic field should be directed into the page for the scale to work.

magnetic force

F= Bil

weight =mg

for the wight to be balalnced

mg = Bil

i = mg/Bl

plugging in the values we get

i =102.6 A
