Question
five equal-mass particles (A–E) enter a region of uniform magnetic field directed into the page. They follow the trajectories illustrated in the figure. (Figure 1)
Part A
Which particle (if any) is neutral?
Part B
Which particle (if any) is negatively charged?
Rank the particles on the basis of their speed.
Rank from largest to smallest. To rank items as equivalent, overlap them.
A
B
C
D
E
Part D
Rank the particles A, B, C, and E on the basis of their speed.
Rank from largest to smallest. To rank items as equivalent, overlap them.
A
B
C
D
E
I have asked this question 3 times and no one wants to answer part D
particle A particle B particle C particle D particle E none A B C D E A BC D EExplanation / Answer
1) as particle D showing none deflection so
D is neutral
2) the direction of force is given by the right hand rule
Using your right-hand ( for +ve charge)
point your index finger in the direction of the charge's velocity, v, (recall conventional current).
Point your middle finger in the direction of the magnetic field, B.
Your thumb now points in the direction of the magnetic force, F
so for negetive charge its opposite to direction of thumb
so A is -ve charge
3) we know that
r = mv /qB
so if radius is large then velocity is also large
so A>B>C=E
4) same as part 3 larger the radius larger the velocity
so A>B>C=E
