Question
The mass of a sports car is 1300 kg. The shape of the car is such that the aerodynamic drag coefficient is 0.240 and the frontal area is 2.20 m^2. Neglecting all other sources of friction, calculate the initial acceleration of the car,if it has been traveling at 100 km/h and is now shifted into neutral and is allowed to coast. (Take the density of air to be 1.295 kg/m^2.) A small piece of Styrofoam packing material is dropped from a height of 2.40 m above the ground. Until it reaches terminal speed, the magnitude of its acceleration is given by a = g - By. After falling 0.600 m, the Styrofoam effectively reaches terminal speed, and then takes 5.50 s more to reach the ground. (a) What is the value of the constant B?Explanation / Answer
a) drag force = rho * A * v^2 * Cd / 2
at terminal velocity,
Fnet = mg - kv^2 = 0
75 x 9.8 = k(52.7^2)
b = 0.26
at v = 30 m/s
Fnet = (75 x 9.8) - (0.26 x 30^2) = 496.81 N
a = Fnet / m = 316.59 / 75 = 4.22 m/s^2
downwards.
B) drag force = 75g = 75 x 9.8 = 735 N
c) drag force = 0.26 x 30^2 = 234 N
