Question

The main role of the protein hemoglobin is to transport oxygen. Red blood cells use hemoglobin to pick up oxygen from the lungs and then drop it off at subsequent cells. Blood also carries sugar (glucose) around the body. Glucose is picked up in the intestine and dropped off subsequent cells. When an individual has sickle cell anemia, blood does not flow properly and oxygen and sugar are not transported effectively.

Oxygen is picked up in the lungs. The cells of lung tissue are held together with junctions. Which of the following is likely to mediate this junction if liquid cannot pass between the cells in the extra-cellular matrix or directly from cell to cell?

Cadherin

Connexin

Calnexin

Claudin

Cadherin

Connexin

Calnexin

Claudin

Explanation / Answer

Answer- Claudin

Claudin helps in forming tight junctions, such as between epithelia and endothelia .They form barrier which maintains permeability of the junction. Tight junction pores is important in different cellular activities such as in organ like stomach, liver, pancreas ovary and lungs etc.

Tight junctions acts as a seal between epithelial cells ,via epithelia selective transport of water and solutes between different compartments is mediated. Transepithelia and paracellular transport . Tight junctions appositions the leaflets of adjacent membranes.
