Question

Please provide detailed solution step by step

A 4.55-kg ball, moving to the right (positive direction) at a velocity of +1.85 m/s on a frictionless table, collides head-on with a stationary 7.40-kg ball. Find the final velocity of the 7.4-kg ball if the collision is elastic.

Explanation / Answer

Here,

mass of ball , m1 = 4.55 Kg

u1 = 1.85 m/s

u2 = 0 m/s

mass of ball 2 , m2 = 7.40 Kg

let the final velocities of balls is v1 and v2

Using conservation of momentum

m1 * u1 + m2 * u2 = m1 * v1 + m2 * v2

4.55 * v1 + 7.40 * v2 = 1.85 * 4.55 ----(1)

as the collision is elastic

coefficient of restitution = 1

u1 = v2 - v1

v2 - v1 = 1.85 ---(2)

solving 1 and 2

v1 = -0.441 m/s

v2 = 1.41 m/s

the speed of 7.40 Kg mass is 1.41 m/s to the right
