Question

pick 3 instead of 1.

Pick one of the following brain areas: hypothalamus, thalamus, hippocampus, superior colliculi, prefrontal cortex, pineal gland. Then, describe what types of symptoms a person would show if that area is damaged due to stroke or injury. Be sure to be thorough in what you think the symptoms would be. [4 points] A person is suffering from frequent seizures that start in the prefrontal cortex before going all through the brain. This is incapacitating to the person, and has been offered a treatment whereby the prefrontal cortex would be removed and therefore the seizures would stop. Is this an ethical procedure? Give the pros and cons to this procedure, and what you might do if this were happening to a friend of yours. [4 points) a. b.

Explanation / Answer

a)Hippocampus-Its damage can result in strange world of new experiences because as the petson cannot remember or recall previous events so every experience will be strange and new to him. There will be memory loss and disorientation because hippocampus deals with memory and spatial orientation of body. The damage can cause hyperactivity and inability to unlearn old habits. There can be oxygen deprivation, hypoxia or infection.

Pineal gland-Pineal gland damage can lead to hormonal imbalance and that can affect the other parts of body as well.

Sleep patterns or sleep wake cycle disrupted.

Since pineal gland secretes melatonin and melatonin interacts with female hormones so if gland damaged then it may affect menstrual cycle and fertility in female.

Hypothalamus- If hypothalamus gets damaged then trophic hormones will no longer be secreted and there will be a hormonal imbalance in the body. The body is unable to bear extremes of changes which can lead to imbalance of sugar level in the blood. Appetite problems, insomnia thirst problems and changes in sleep wake cycle may occur. Movement disorders particularly that involving involuntary muscles may occur.

B) the prefrontal cortex serves as an area of connection the procedure of removal of the prefrontal cortex is known as lobotomy and the connections from the anterior part of frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex are severed. This is an unethical procedure because it leads to loss of the person's personality and Intellect. Show the risks associated with this surgery are more than the benefits also it is not used these days and is taken into consideration only after all the other procedures have failed. The person losses his all cerebral capacities.Althought it may be sufficient in stopping the seizures but the expense is too much.Removal is not a dolution of something.First I would try treating my friend with antiepileptic drugs and note the patterns of seizures taking into consideration the other causes that might also cause it. Then electrical stimulation device may be an option .If it fails then I would take surgery into consideration and even then I would take care to solve the problem without affecting other parts of the brain as much as possible
