Cost

Incandescent

100W

1500

$0.85

CFL

25W

3500

$1.55

LED

22W

50,000

a.)

Calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO) of each bulb assuming that you pay $0.15/kWh. TCO is how much money you spend to buy and use the light bulb for its expected life.

b.)

Calculate how much money you would spend on lighting your home using the three bulbs. How can you compare these three technologies? What light bulb would you recommend using and why?

Explanation / Answer

a) for Incandescent:

Power consumed = 100 W x 1500 h = 150 kWh

consumption cost = 150 x($ 0.15) = $75

buying cost = $0.85

TCO = 75 + 0.85 = $75.85

for CFL:

Power consumed = 25 W x 3500 h = 87.5 kWh

consumption cost = 87.5 x($ 0.15) = $13.125

buying cost = $1.55

TCO = 13.125 + 1.55 = $14.675

for LED:

Power consumed = 22 W x 50,000 h = 1100 kWh

consumption cost = 1100 x($ 0.15) = $165

buying cost = $11.99

TCO = $176.99

b)

for LED:

per hour cost = 176.99 / 50,000 = $0.00354 = 0.35 cents per hour

for CFL:

per hour cost = 14.675 / 3500 = $0.0042 = 0.42 cents per hour

for Incandescent :

per hour cost = 75.85 / 1500 = $0.0506 = 5.06 cents per hour

SO LED is the best option.
